Technology due diligence checklist
What a thorough technology due diligence actually examines — use it to assess a target, or to get your own business ready for scrutiny.
The checklist
A technology due diligence checklist covers six areas: architecture and scalability; security and compliance; technical debt and roadmap; team and key-person risk; licensing and suppliers; and data and AI. Here's what to look for in each.
Architecture & scalability
- Will the architecture carry the growth plan, or does it need re-work first?
- Single points of failure, bottlenecks and capacity headroom.
- Cloud posture, cost and portability.
Security & compliance
- Security baseline, known incidents, and exposure.
- Data protection, certifications (e.g. ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials) and gaps.
Technical debt & roadmap
- End-of-life systems and the real cost to remediate.
- How credible and funded the roadmap is.
Team & key-person risk
- How much depends on one or two people.
- Documentation, handover risk and hiring need.
Licensing & suppliers
- License compliance and true cost.
- Critical vendor dependencies and contract exposure.
Data & AI
- Data quality, ownership and value.
- Genuine AI capability versus marketing.
