Fractional CTO vs Full-Time CTO: Which Do You Need?

A fractional CTO takes responsibility for technology decisions and delivery for an agreed number of days. A full-time CTO provides that leadership every working day. The choice depends on the workload, the team and the stage of the business.

For founder-led companies, fractional leadership brings senior experience into the business before a permanent appointment makes commercial sense.

What does a fractional CTO take responsibility for?

Your fractional CTO owns the agreed priorities: setting the technology roadmap, leading suppliers and teams, controlling spend and getting delivery back on track. Typical engagements run for two to four days a month, with the scope and time agreed around the work.

A full-time CTO carries that responsibility across the working week. The decision is how much leadership time your operation needs.

When to choose a fractional CTO

  • Technology decisions keep landing on the founder’s desk and need a senior owner.
  • A raise, acquisition or change programme needs experienced leadership for a defined period.
  • Your team can deliver the work but needs clearer priorities, stronger management or help with difficult decisions.
  • You need to control the cost of senior leadership as the business scales.

When to hire a full-time CTO

  • Managing the technology team and its delivery requires a senior leader every day.
  • Product development, hiring and operational demands fill a permanent role.
  • The business has the workload and budget to support a full-time executive.

Fractional CTO vs full-time CTO costs

Seneca’s indicative day rate is £1,100 ex VAT. Two days a month costs £2,200 per month or £26,400 over 12 months, ex VAT. This is a budgeting example; we agree the days, scope and engagement period with you.

Longer commitments can attract agreed discounts: 5% for six months and 10% for more than six months. There is no standard minimum commitment. See our day rates and engagement pricing.

A full-time CTO has an indicative annual employment budget of £140,000 to £230,000, allowing for salary, employer costs, bonus and recruitment in the first year. Equity is a separate part of the offer.

Moving from a fractional to a full-time CTO

A fractional CTO can establish the roadmap, strengthen the team and define the permanent role. When the workload supports a full-time hire, you recruit against a clear brief and hand over an operation with established priorities.

Questions about fractional and full-time CTOs

Is a fractional CTO cheaper than a full-time CTO?

At two days a month, Seneca’s standard rate totals £26,400 a year ex VAT, before any agreed commitment discount. The saving comes from buying the leadership time you need. Budget for enough days to deliver the agreed work.

Do investors require a full-time CTO?

Some investors require a permanent technical leader as the business grows. A fractional CTO can lead technical discussions, explain the roadmap and take responsibility for delivery before that appointment. Establish any hiring requirement with the investor during the raise.

How many days should I book a fractional CTO for?

Two to four days a month is typical. We agree the time around your priorities, team and delivery workload. A transaction or major change programme can need a more intensive engagement.

Can a fractional CTO help recruit a full-time CTO?

Yes. They can define the role, assess candidates and manage the handover, so the incoming CTO starts with clear priorities and an informed view of the operation.
