When Should a Startup Hire Its First CTO?

Hire your first CTO when product, hiring and supplier decisions need an accountable technical owner. Fractional leadership can cover that gap until the workload calls for someone full-time.

Three signs your startup needs a CTO

  1. Product decisions stall delivery. No one owns priorities, architecture or build-versus-buy choices.
  2. Engineers or suppliers lack direction. No senior person owns the brief, spending or acceptance of delivered work.
  3. Technical risk affects the business plan. Reliability, security or scaling costs threaten a customer or investment commitment.

The trigger is a leadership gap, not a funding round or headcount.

Choose fractional or full-time CTO leadership

A fractional CTO owns agreed decisions and delivery while the team runs day-to-day work. Typical engagements are two to four days a month. Agree priorities, authority and availability first.

Hire full-time when the team and product need senior leadership every day. Define the role from the workload, not a funding label.

Our indicative rate is £1,100 per day ex VAT. Two days a month is £2,200 per month ex VAT. Scope and terms are agreed individually; longer-term discounts are separate. See fractional CTO costs.

Give your first CTO a clear brief

Before appointing anyone, the founder or chief executive should agree:

  • Outcomes: which deadlines, costs or customer problems must improve?
  • Authority: who approves spending, hires and supplier changes?
  • Delivery: who does the work, and how will progress be reviewed?

Use that brief to compare fractional cover with a permanent hire.

Questions about hiring your first CTO

Can a founder act as the first CTO?

Yes, if they have the judgement and time to own product, hiring and supplier decisions. Bring in cover when those decisions delay delivery.

Do I need a CTO before hiring my first developer?

Not always. Make sure someone can define the work, assess the approach and accept what is delivered.

When does a full-time CTO make sense?

When the team and product need senior leadership every working day. Define the responsibilities before recruiting.

Can a fractional CTO recruit a permanent CTO?

Yes. They can define the role, assess candidates and hand over an agreed plan.
