How Many Days a Month Does a Fractional CTO Need?
A typical fractional CTO engagement is two to four days a month. The allocation should cover the decisions and delivery your business needs someone senior to own. At our indicative standard rate of £1,100 per day, two days a month costs £2,200 per month, ex VAT.
Start with the priorities: replacing a business system, getting suppliers under control, preparing for investment or resolving delivery problems. We agree the time needed to move that work forward with your team.

These are examples, not fixed packages. One day can suit a focused advisory brief. Two to four days allows a broader leadership remit, with responsibility for agreed priorities, supplier decisions and delivery. The scope must fit the time available.
Longer commitments can attract a 5% discount at six months (£1,045 per day) or 10% for more than six months (£990 per day), agreed individually. All rates exclude VAT. See fractional CTO costs and day rates for the current terms.
Allow for the initial work and ongoing leadership
An engagement may need more time at the start to assess systems, meet the team, challenge supplier commitments and establish a delivery plan. Once those foundations are in place, the ongoing allocation can change by agreement.
A business with capable delivery staff and a small number of priorities may need less senior time than one managing several suppliers, an acquisition or a major system replacement. Where the work requires daily leadership, we discuss a larger allocation or interim support rather than squeeze it into a few days a month.
How we size your fractional CTO engagement
- Identify the outcomes. Agree what needs to improve and which decisions are holding it up.
- Separate initial work from recurring responsibilities. A supplier review or integration plan takes different effort from running delivery meetings and managing an ongoing programme.
- Check who will deliver the work. Establish the responsibilities of your staff, suppliers and fractional CTO, including preparation and follow-through between meetings.
- Agree the allocation and review it. Set the days, scope and fee, then revisit them as priorities change.
