Fractional vs Interim vs Virtual CTO: What’s the Difference?

Choose fractional CTO support for ongoing part-time leadership, interim cover for an intensive temporary assignment, and check what a virtual CTO offer actually includes. Match the time and authority to the work you need delivered.

Compare fractional, interim and virtual CTO support

Fractional CTO: ongoing leadership

A fractional CTO takes responsibility for agreed priorities, suppliers and delivery alongside your team. Typical engagements use two to four days a month, with the workload determining the time required.

Interim CTO: intensive temporary cover

An interim CTO leads a defined assignment, often full-time: covering a departure, managing an acquisition integration or recovering a struggling programme. Agree the outcomes and handover point at the outset.

Virtual CTO: check the scope

Virtual usually describes remote delivery, often on a fractional basis. Ask whether the service includes leading people and suppliers, or only scheduled advice. The label alone does not establish responsibility or availability.

Agree the CTO brief before booking days

  • Set the priorities: the chief executive names the decisions and delivery problems the CTO will own.
  • Match the availability: agree working days, site visits and how urgent decisions are handled between booked days.
  • Define authority: specify spending limits, team responsibilities and decisions needing board approval.
  • Review progress: agree outcomes, reporting and when to increase, reduce or hand over support.

Compare fractional and interim CTO costs

Seneca’s indicative rate is £1,100 per day ex VAT. Two days a month costs £2,200 per month ex VAT; intensive interim cover costs more because it uses more days.

There is no standard minimum commitment. Scope, time and terms are agreed individually. Discounts for longer ongoing engagements are separate; see our technology leadership pricing.

Questions about CTO engagement models

Can interim cover become a fractional CTO engagement?

Yes. Once the intensive work is complete, agree the remaining responsibilities and reduce the time accordingly.

Does a virtual CTO ever work on site?

That depends on the agreement. Confirm site attendance and travel costs before appointing someone.
