Fractional CTO for Non-Technical Founders
A fractional CTO gives a non-technical founder control over technology spending, suppliers and delivery. You set the business priorities. We turn them into a costed plan, take responsibility for the agreed work and keep you clear on progress and decisions.
That matters when proposals are hard to compare, projects keep slipping or every supplier has a different answer. You need someone who can challenge the detail and get the work delivered without making you the technical go-between.
What a fractional CTO owns for a non-technical founder
We agree the responsibilities at the start, so you know which decisions we will make and which come back to you. The work can cover a software product, the systems running your business or both.
- Spending and priorities. Assess proposals, identify duplicated costs and decide which work earns its place in the budget.
- Suppliers and delivery. Set clear requirements, agree milestones, challenge missed commitments and check that completed work meets the brief.
- Systems and technical decisions. Choose an approach that fits the operation, the team and the budget, with the costs of running and changing it made clear.
- Your internal team. Give people direction, resolve competing priorities and identify where they need skills or capacity.
- Investment preparation. Connect the growth plan to the systems, people and spending required to deliver it.
How founders and fractional CTOs make decisions together
You retain control of the business direction and agreed spending limits. Your CTO takes ownership of the technical work within that remit. A decision that changes the budget, launch date or customer commitment comes back with a recommendation and the consequences explained.
For example, if a supplier recommends replacing your customer management system, we assess the underlying problem first. We compare fixing the existing setup with replacing it, including migration, staff time and ongoing costs. You get a recommendation you can judge commercially, and someone responsible for taking the agreed option through to delivery.
Agree a short reporting format: what has been completed, what comes next, spend against budget and decisions needed from you. This keeps progress visible without filling your diary with technical meetings.
Working with developers and agencies through a fractional CTO
A good agency brings valuable technical expertise and advice. Your fractional CTO connects that work to the wider business: other suppliers, internal systems, operating costs and competing priorities.
We agree what success looks like before work starts, check proposals and changes, and resolve issues with the people delivering the work. You have one senior owner to turn to when a project crosses several teams or suppliers.
How to assess a fractional CTO without a technical background
Bring a real problem to the first conversation. Ask what they would examine, what they would take responsibility for and how they would report progress. They should explain the costs and choices in language you can act on.
Ask a previous client what changed under their leadership. Did delivery improve? Were costs controlled? How did they handle a missed commitment? These answers tell you more than a list of platforms or job titles.
Fractional CTO costs and time for founder-led businesses
Seneca’s indicative rate is £1,100 per day ex VAT. Two days a month costs £2,200 per month ex VAT. Typical fractional engagements use two to four days a month; the right commitment depends on the work and who is available to deliver it.
There is no standard minimum commitment. We agree scope, days, fee and engagement terms before starting. Longer-term discounts are agreed separately. If the work needs daily leadership, we will discuss that requirement with you.
Non-technical founders’ questions about fractional CTO support
Do I need a technical co-founder or a fractional CTO?
Choose a technical co-founder when you want a long-term business partner sharing ownership and responsibility for building the company. A fractional CTO provides senior leadership for an agreed fee and time commitment. The choice depends on the role you need filled, the workload and whether shared ownership is part of your plan.
Can a fractional CTO manage my developers or agency?
Yes. We agree priorities, assess proposals, manage delivery and hold suppliers to agreed standards. Developers and agencies carry out the technical work; your fractional CTO takes responsibility for the agreed decisions and delivery.
How does a fractional CTO support investment preparation?
We explain the technology behind the business plan, test delivery assumptions and identify the costs and work needed to support growth. We also prepare the team and documentation for investor questions.
